The St. Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) Exam is a tool used to screen adult clients for cognitive impairment. It assesses cognition across nine domains: attention, immediate recall, orientation, delayed recall, numeric calculation, registration, visual spatial, executive function, and extrapolation. Two sets of scoring criteria are available: high school education and less than high school education. High school education: Maximum score = 30. Normal = 27-30. Mild cognitive disorder = 21-26. Dementia = 1-20. Less than high school education: Maximum score = 30. Normal = 25-30. Mild cognitive disorder = 20-24. Dementia = 1-19.
